Kinect 2.0 Specs Leaked

The specs for Kinect 2.0 have been leaked, and new features seem to correct some of the biggest flaws of the original version. Two of the most notable are an improved field of view and a mode for sitting. Instead of tracking just two players, the new Kinect can track up to 6 people, creating lots of new party game possibilities. Parents will be happy to know that the new Kinect will be able to track players as short as 1 meter, opening up all the Disney and Sesame Street games to toddlers.

The 1920 x 1080 screen resolution is a great improvement over the original Kinect's 640 x 480 capability. With a higher resolution depth stream and an improved active infrared (IR) stream, the graphics should be much improved, as will facial and hand recognition—a welcome improvement over the current Kinect, which has issues with lighting and cannot recognize faces in a dark room.

The leaked specs refer to the new Kinect sensor as the "Durango Sensor." This could mean that Microsoft has reverted to its original decision to title the Xbox "Durango," although most media outlets are still referring to the next-gen console as the Xbox 720.

There's no official release date for the new Kinect, but it's estimated to come out some time after the launch of  Xbox 720.
