When the Los Angeles Dodgers aquired Hanley Ramirez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez in a trade mid-way through last season, nearly everyone thought they were a lock for the playoffs. They didn't make it. So the team went out this past off-season and nabbed starting pitcher Zack Grienke and shortstop Skip Schumaker to add to their already star-studded lineup.

Fly north and east to Toronto, where the Blue Jays made some big moves themselves. They inked N.L. Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to a deal.  They reeled in Mark Buerhle and Jose Reyes. The Dodgers and Jays have gone all-in by collecting superstars and hoping they produce.

Yet you need only to look to a basketball team in Los Angeles to see the negative result of throwing a bunch of superstars on a team together and praying to Zeus that it works. As the L.A. Lakers flounder through the 2012-2013 NBA season, we take a look back at some of the most talented (and most expensive) teams that didn't live up to anything near their potential.
