Fans of Ratchet & Clank will be happy to know that the popular platform video game will be getting the silver screen treatment. Developers of the film, Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, recently announced that they are currently in production on the animated 3D film and plan on releasing it some time in 2015.
Created and developed by Insomniac Games, Ratchet & Clank was first released in November 2002 for the PlayStation 2. Famous for its outrageous weapons and gadgets, the game follows the misadventures of its two protagonists: Ratchet, an omniwrench-wielding Lombax (an anthropomorphic, cat-like creature with an affinity for mechanics and gadgetry); and his sidekick Clank, a tiny robot born in a factory in Quartu. Throughout the game, the two team up with allies like Captain Qwark and Alister Azimuth to travel through the universe and battle evil forces.
The task of translating the game's storyline to the big screen fell to Insomniac Games' senior writer T.J. Fixman, who's writing the script for the film. Insomniac has confirmed that Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark will retain their original voices: James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank, and Jim Ward as Qwark. Insomniac is hands-on with character development, production, and animation consulting.
According to the official press release, the movie "tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind—a foolhardy 'lombax' who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one's own identity."
