Al Pacino Stars in ‘Danny Collins’
Al Pacino portrays an aging 1970’s rock star who makes a life altering discovery in the big screen dramedy Danny Collins. In this star-studded film, Collins comes across a 40-year-old undelivered letter from John Lennon, which leads him to rediscover his family, search for true love and embark on a second act.
The movie was inspired by an intriguing true story about British singer/songwriter Steve Tilston, who gave an interview to Zig Zag magazine following the release of his first album in 1971, in which he opined that fame and fortune would be detrimental to his songwriting. According to the film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, after reading the article, John Lennon “decided to share his own experiences with celebrity and wrote a letter to Tilston explaining that he “had experienced wealth beyond the dreams of Avarice and it hadn’t affected his songwriting.” Lennon included his home phone number and signed the letter “love, John and Yoko.”
Tilston never received the letter and wasn’t aware it existed until an American collector contacted him about it in 2005.
The cast features Jennifer Garner (Dallas Buyers Club), Christopher Plummer (National Treasure), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right), Josh Peck (The Wedding Ringer) and Melissa Benoist (Glee and Supergirl).
The screenplay was written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love), who also directed the movie, making his feature film directorial debut.
Danny Collins opens in limited release March 20 before hitting theaters nationwide on April 3.
