Sony Picks Up Holocaust Film ‘Son of Saul’
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American rights to the drama Son of Saul, a powerful movie about a prisoner named Saul, who is forced to work at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp.
The star of the film, Géza Röhrig, was quoted in The Guardian about the relevance of the subject matter in today’s world, and the lack of progress society has made in the decades since World War II. He said, “I think it’s fair to say that we haven’t learned anything from Auschwitz. The cruelty exhibited there exists today against the Kurds and elsewhere. You have a feeling of insecurity about tomorrow. There’s a level of chaos because global powers do not agree on the most minimal consensus.”
This project is an important milestone for Hungarian filmmaker Laszlo Nemes, who is making his big screen directorial debut, and Röhrig, who is acting in his first feature film.
The movie was very well received at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, earning substantial praise from critics. Boyd van Hoeij, who reviewed the picture for The Hollywood Reporter, said, “Utterly uneasy to watch but strikingly and confidently assembled, the film is a powerful aural and visual experience that doesn’t quite manage to sustain itself over the course of its running time, but is a remarkable—and remarkably intense—experience nonetheless.”
The cast also features Björn Freiberg of the upcoming Matt Damon movie The Martian, along with Urs Rechn (The King’s Surrender) and Sándor Zsótér (White God).
