Chris Archer Explains the Pitch That's Helping Him Lead the American League in Strikeouts

The Rays' pitcher has fanned 12 batters in a single game twice this season. Here's a big reason why.

Twice this season, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer has struck out 12 batters in a single game—first on Opening Day, and more recently on Monday night, when the Rays beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4. The All-Star pitcher now  leads the American League in strikeouts with 88, and while his record on the season is 4-7, the Rays are hot right now and are carrying a 4-game win streak.

Archer says a big part of his success is the pitch he's mastered: the slider. Last year, Major League managers rated Archer's slider best in the AL, according to Baseball America.
