Just Watching Von Miller's Epic Sand Dune Workout Will Leave You Exhausted

Miller recently said he'd like to improve his endurance so he can play more snaps in 2017. If he keeps training like this, he'll never have to leave the field.

Von Miller isn't satisfied.

The 28-year-old outside linebacker was recently ranked as the best defensive player in the NFL by his peers, yet he's still searching for ways to expand his greatness.

Though Miller played on 81.2 percent of the Denver Broncos' defensive snaps last season, he'd like that number to be closer to 100 percent. "If I can stay on the field, I can play eight snaps instead of five snaps. It allows me more time to make plays, and it allows me more opportunities and exposure to make plays," Miller told ESPN in May. "Cardio and endurance is really the thing that I need to focus on."

This offseason, Miller's been working to take his aerobic capacity to superhuman heights. He recently shared a video of a brutal sand dune workout that saw him sprinting, backpedaling and jumping himself to exhaustion (all while wearing a 20-pound weighted vest and holding a 20-pound medicine ball):

Training on sand is an easy way to make just about any workout more fatiguing. An article in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that running on sand requires 15 percent more mechanical work and expends 60 percent more energy than running on a hard surface. Translation—this is exactly the sort of workout that can help Miller better fight off fatigue during the rigors of an NFL game.

"I want to push my body to a spot where it's never been before," Miller said. "You're never guaranteed that working hard will translate to on-the-field success, but that's what I'm hoping for. I've never worked as hard as I'm working."

An indefatigable Miller coming off the edge play after play is the last thing any offensive tackle wants to encounter.
