Tuesday's Best Rap Releases (Oct 16)
Today is light on official rap releases, but the genre more than makes up for it in free mixtapes. This week’s offerings include one southern player looking to reclaim his spot in the game, a hip-hop festival compilation, an International artist’s highly anticipated sophomore LP, and one of this year’s XXL Top 10 Freshman’s latest mixtapes. Check out the list below.
K’Naan – Country, God, or the Girl
K’Naan’s fourth album features collaborations with singer Nelly Furtado and fellow rapper Nas. The Canadian artist is known for his ability to hide deep thought-provoking lyrics within pop-infused beats (Check out: Wavin’ Flag), and he continues to perfect the craft with his latest LP. His nationwide fall tour starts up again on October 21, and he will embark on another one next year.
Stand-out: Is Anybody Out There, feat Nelly Furtado
Gucci Mane – Trap God
Away from the spotlight for the last year or so tending to legal troubles, Gucci Mane hopes to re-acquaint himself with his fans via the release of his new mixtape. Trap God finds the Atlanta rapper linking up with some of the South’s best producers, including Mike Will Made It, Zaytoven, and Shawty Red—and picking up features from his label-mates Waka Flocka Flame, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Future, and Kirko Bangz.
Stand-out: Wish You Would, feat Verse Simmonds
A3C- A3C Volume 2
Atlanta Hip-Hop Festival A3C linked up with iHipHop Distribution for the second iteration of their compilation album featuring past and present artists from their festival. It’s a solid buy that gives you the opportunity to check the up-and-coming underground artists and play some the newer tunes from the old heads.
Stand-outs: Denzil Porter – “Rock, Paper, Scissors”
Iggy Azalea – TrapGold
As the first female to grace the cover on XXL’s Top 10 Freshman issue, Iggy Azalea was put under a microscope early on. The Australian has released tons of free music to win over fans ahead of her Grand Hustle début, which is expected to drop in the first half of next year. TrapGold is produced by Diplo and features the teaser track, Bac 2 Tha Future (My Time.)
Stand-out: Bac 2 Tha Future (My Time)
In case you’ve gotten behind on your purchases, earlier this month the highlights were: Numbers by MellowHype, Quality Street Music, by DJ Drama, and Machine Gun Kelly’s Lace Up. Rick Ross’ mixtape The Black Bar Mitzvah and New York rapper Top $ Raz’s Reign On the Parade were also released as free downloads.
