Before Golden State Warriors point Guard Stephen Curry began setting records and winning the NBA championship, he was just a normal guy. He went through struggles like other guys, like getting awkwardly denied a first kiss—even from his future wife Ayesha.

In an exclusive interview with Parents, Steph and Ayesha opened up about their relationship. As teenagers, they went to the same church, where Steph always had his eye on Ayesha. But since she was forbidden to date in high school, nothing really kindled.

Later on, when Steph was at Davidson College and Ayesha was in Los Angeles, they met on Facebook, then hung out when he was in town for an ESPYS award show. This is when it happened—the denial.

Ayesha: I mean, it was friend vibes … until I dodged his first kiss.

Steph: Yep. I struck out.

Ayesha: He was in mid-conversation and came flying at my face like a thief in the night. So I was like, No. Then I thought, "Oh, I didn't know this is what was happening."

Despite whiffing on his first kiss attempt, Steph ultimately prevailed. A couple of years later, the two got engaged. So don't worry guys: If you get turned away on your first kiss, there's always hope.
