PlayStation Coming to Samsung Smart TVs in 2015
Starting next year, Sony’s game streaming service PlayStation Now will be available on a non-Sony device. Last week, the company announced a partnership with Samsung Electronics that will bring the cloud-based service to owners of select Smart TVs via Samsung’s Smart Hub in 2015.
“Our vision has been to open the world of PlayStation to the masses by offering the service on the devices they use every day,” said Sony Computer Entertainment Executive VP Masayasu Ito. “Partnering with Samsung is a key step toward realizing this vision, as we can reach a broader audience of consumers who may not own a PlayStation console to show them why gaming with PlayStation is such a unique and amazing experience.”
Using the service, which is currently in open beta, gamers can play games directly via their TVs without having to download titles or, in this case, without having a Sony console in their home. Users will, however, have to purchase a DualShock 4 controller. The app will have full functionality, so users will have access to online multiplayer and the ability to earn trophies and save game progress in the cloud.
Sony will show the new feature in action at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month. But it’s currently unclear when the app will officially launch on Samsung Smart TVs. The Playstation Now library currently houses a couple hundred PS3 games, but Sony is expected to bring in games from the original PS and the PS2 soon.
