Matthew Vaughn Is Developing ‘Kick-Ass’ Prequel ‘Hit-Girl’
Matthew Vaughn is taking a fresh approach with the next installment of the Kick-Ass action comedy franchise. It may surprise you to learn there will be a new installment at all, considering the disastrous reception of Kick-Ass 2. But that’s why he’s going in a different direction with the upcoming movie, planned as a Hit-Girl-centric prequel.
Vaughn talked to Yahoo about the premise for this intriguing new feature and the motivation behind it. He said, “We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit-Girl and Big Daddy become Hit-Girl and Big Daddy. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like Kick-Ass 2, and then we can go off and make Kick-Ass 3. I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with Kick-Ass.”
Earlier this year Vaughn, who writes and produces the franchise, said he and creator Mark Millar already had the film plotted and were working on the script, but it’s not clear when filming will begin.
Vaughn provided some additional info on Kick-Ass 3. Most details are being kept under wraps, but he revealed that it would probably be set somewhere in the Far East and that they are looking for a director like Gareth Evans (The Raid). Also, it’s likely that stars Aaron Taylor Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz will return.
Based on the comic books by Millar and John Romita Jr., the Kick-Ass films revolve around a comics fan who makes up his mind to become a superhero despite having no training and no superpowers.
