WATCH: Jameis Winston Is Working Out With Michael Jordan’s Trainer
Plenty of adjectives accurately describe Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, but “svelte” is not one one of them. Winston’s body composition has always been on the round side, as if his baby fat never fully melted away. The extra weight certainly didn’t affect his play at Florida State, but Winston’s rookie season in the NFL opened his eyes to the kind of shape he needs to get himself into as he approaches his second year with the Bucs.
“The most important thing I learned is I have to get my body in shape, because those men look good,” Winston told the MMQB. “Not just the other quarterbacks—everyone. Their bodies look good.”
Winston also noted that he wanted to focus on his footwork this off-season, improving his foot speed and being “smoother in the pocket.”
Winston wasted no time putting his words into action. To begin preparing for the season ahead, he linked up with Michael Jordan’s former trainer, Tim Grover of Attack Athletics. In a video Grover posted to Instagram, Winston kneels on the ground holding a football, pops up without using his arms and moves into a five-step drop before throwing a pass. The drill works his lower-body strength, balance and foot speed, clearly his main focus.
We’ll look forward to seeing what Winston looks like when he hits training camp this summer.
