Movie Version of ‘Angry Birds’ in the Works
A film based on the wildly successful Angry Birds game is currently in the works. John Cohen, producer of Despicable Me, recently signed on to produce the 3D CG-animated Angry Birds movie, to be distributed by Sony.
Since its release in 2009, the game has remained extremely popular. It’s latest version skyrocketed to the top of the iOS charts in just 2 1/2 hours. No one can predict what will happen when the video game is adapted for the big screen, but with so much enthusiasm surrounding the franchise, it will be greatly anticipated and likely well received.
Further evidence of its blockbuster potential is the fact that Clay Kaytis, animator of such hits as Wreck–It Ralph and Frozen, has agreed to direct the film, along with storyboard artist Fergal Reilly (Hotel Transylvania). The screenplay will be written by Jon Vitti, who is known for his work on the small screen (The Simpsons) as well as feature films (Alvin and the Chipmunks).
Michael Lynton, Chairman & CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal said in a statement, “Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate. There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table.”
It has been rumored that Marshall Rimmer, known for his work on Rooster Teeth Shorts, will star in the movie.
Angry Birds is expected to hit theaters in July of 2016.
