The forthcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, originally scheduled to reach theaters on Aug. 7, 2015, has been pushed back.

The delay is somewhat related to Fox’s recent announcement about its upcoming Deadpool movie. But there are also reports about trouble with the script (requiring several re-writes) and production hampered by scheduling conflicts.

Last month during an interview with IGN, Michael Fassbender, who has been attached to the project from the beginning, squashed persistent gossip that the movie is in trouble. “I know, I love these rumors,” exclaimed the actor. “It’s fantastic. People talk about it, and they’re hopefully interested. Nothing has changed. I’m still a part of Assassin’s Creed, and we’re working on the script as we speak.”

He also said the film adaptation would remain true to the video game plot as much as possible, but that it would introduce new ideas. “We absolutely want to respect the game,” he declared. “There’s so much cool stuff in the game that we’re actually spoiled in terms of what we can use and what we can’t. But we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game. We’re working very hard to make sure that we’ve got the best and most exciting, original package.”

Robert Downey Jr. is rumored to be joining the cast to portray Leonardo da Vinci, which implies that the movie will draw its inspiration from the storyline of Assassin’s Creed II.

The film will be directed by Justin Kurzel, who is also working with Fassbender on an upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

The Assassin’s Creed movie is now expected to premiere sometime in 2016.
