There has been considerable buzz in recent months about the upcoming big screen crime drama Black Mass. An impressive ensemble cast, featuring A-listers Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp and Sienna Miller, is undoubtedly one of the reasons for the enthusiasm. If that’s not enough, the premise itself is fascinating.
The film is based on the high profile true story of notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger (Depp), the most violent criminal in the history of South Boston. Bulger, who was also the brother of a senator, eventually became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family encroaching on his turf. He later wound up on the FBI’s most wanted list, prompting him to go into hiding for many years,
Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) plays Whitey’s brother Bill. Sienna Miller (American Sniper) is cast as Bulger’s longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, who lived with him while he was hiding. The cast also features Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), The Killing’s Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) and veteran actor Kevin Bacon.
The film is an adaptation of the bestselling book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mafia. The film was directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), who also co-wrote the screenplay with newcomer Mark Mallouk.
Black Mass will hit theaters nationwide Sept. 18.
