Cam Newton Shares His Thoughts on Muhammad Ali’s Death and the Impact the Legendary Boxer Had on Him
Muhammad Ali, widely regarded as the greatest boxer to step into the ring and an advocate for social justice outside of it, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. His passing prompted an outpouring of emotions and tributes from athletes in every sport, revealing how big an impact the man who coined the phrase “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” had on the entire sports world.
Ali’s life had a profound effect on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who told STACK that he had followed the champ’s career ever since he first began playing sports. Speaking from his Cam Newton Foundation 7v7 Tournament in his hometown of Atlanta, Ga., Newton shared some powerful words about what Ali meant not just to him, but to the entire world.
“Even though he was a boxer, he stood for something bigger than that,” Newton told STACK. “He stood for confidence. He stood for freedom. He had the mouth of a poet, the heart of a father of a thousand sons and the skill of a craftsman. Everything he stood for, I try to mimic.”
You can watch Newton’s full comments above, and R.I.P. to one of the greatest athletes in human history.
