Tom Hardy Stars in ‘Child 44’
Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) will star in the thriller Child 44. Set in the Stalin-era Soviet Union, the story follows disgraced secret police agent Leo Demidov (Hardy), who makes a startling discovery while living in exile after a colleague frames him for treason. In his remote outpost, Demidov uncovers a series of mysterious child murders and is shocked to find a link between these unthinkable crimes and the top leadership of the Communist Party. Refusing to be intimidated by powerful members of government who want to shut him up, Demidov bravely continues to investigate the murders, determined to catch the killer.
In addition to the mystery storyline, this film is also about politics, as Demidov goes from being a staunch Soviet loyalist to finding himself himself at odds with his government.
In the role of Demidov’s supportive and encouraging wife Raisa is rising star Noomi Rapace, a Swedish actress best known for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Prometheus. Also starring are Gary Oldman and his Dawn of the Planet of the Apes co-star Jason Clarke, along with Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance.
Based on the first novel in Tom Rob Smith’s bestselling trilogy, the screenplay was written by veteran scribe Richard Price (The Color of Money). For several years Price has been writing for TV, penning episodes of The Wire and Criminal Justice.
Directing the film is Daniel Espinosa, whose most recent work includes another mystery thriller, the 2012 Denzel Washington flick Safe House.
Child 44 will open in theaters nationwide on April 17, 2015.
