Horror Flick ‘Death Note’ Gets Director Adam Wingard
An impressive team is boarding the upcoming horror flick Death Note. The latest high-profile filmmaker to sign on is director Adam Wingard, who is best known for cult horror movies like You’re Next and more recently the Dan Stevens thriller The Guest. Wingard is actually taking over for Shane Black (Iron Man 3), who was formerly set to direct.
The iconic Roy Lee, of The Woman in Black franchise and The LEGO Movie, is already set to produce this new project, which will be a big screen adaptation of a popular horror manga. Producing alongside Lee is his LEGO Movie collaborator Dan Lin, as well as producers Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow) and actor Masi Oka, of TV’s Hawaii Five-0.
Previously adapted to film in Japan, the story follows a student who resolves to rid the world of evil through a supernatural notebook he discovers, which allows him to kill whomever he chooses, just by writing the victim’s name. When a reclusive policeman goes after him, a game of cat and mouse begins.
Fantastic Four writer Jeremy Slater wrote the current draft of the screenplay.
Wingard, who made an impression early in his career with the acclaimed low budget pic Pop Skull, is being recognized as a major talent and has been compared to such prominent directors as David Lynch. He is also at work on the small screen, directing the comic book-based TV series Outcast. Before directing The Death Note, Wingard will film a horror movie for Lionsgate this summer, titled The Woods from his own script.
