Elijah Wood Stars in Dylan Thomas Biopic ‘Set Fire to the Stars’
In the upcoming big screen feature Set Fire to the Stars, Elijah Wood plays aspiring poet and New York academic John M. Brinnin, who experiences a wild and unforgettable week in the company of the hell-raising Welsh writer Dylan Thomas.
Referred to by some as a rock-star poet, Thomas was as outrageous, self-destructive and temperamental as he was talented. This film, set in 1950, views the iconic Thomas from the perspective of Brinnin, who is tasked with overseeing the Welsh author’s first American tour. The young man idolizes Thomas, but Brinnin’s well-ordered world is soon turned upside down as he tries to save the alcoholic author and get him in shape for America by attempting to detoxify him while on retreat.
In this biopic, based on true events, Thomas’s behavior shocks the New York literary world; but it has an even more profound effect on Brinnin, whose admiration of Thomas is tested during their time together.
Starring as Thomas is accomplished Welsh actor Celyn Jones (Agatha Christie’s Marple). In the role of Thomas’s wife Caitlin is Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes film franchise). The cast also includes Steven Mackintosh (Kick-Ass 2), Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter franchise), Kevin Eldon (Death Comes to Pemberley) and Steve Speirs, best known to American audiences for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
The film was written and directed by Andy Goddard, best known for directing episodes of popular TV series such as Doctor Who and Downton Abbey. Goddard collaborated on the screenplay with Celyn Jones. The project is Jones’s feature film screenwriting debut.
Set Fire to the Stars will hit theaters on June 12.
