STACK Plays GoldenEye 007: Reloaded
It’s not every day you see a remake of a game that was remade a year ago (and 14 years after the original release). But that’s the situation with Activision’s GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, this time released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Is it worth the investment? After we spent some time with the HD revamp, our answer is absolutely yes.
When the original GoldenEye came to the Nintendo 64, it revolutionized the shooter genre, especially with its entertaining, trash talk-inducing multiplayer mode. Friends and teammates spent hour after hour seeking the golden gun. Needless to say, the game made its mark, entering the annals of video game history. Seeing this classic remade in beautiful HD environments is a treat for any gamer, whether he remembers the original or is completely new to the series.
Gameplay and Graphics
The single-player campaign returns largely untouched from the original Wii remake from a year ago, so PS3 and Xbox 360 owners can marvel instead at the amazing HD update and cinematic feel of the game. Although cinematic elements were present in the Wii version (including the incredible, stylized Bond intro, like in the films), the HD graphics help maintain that cinematic feel throughout the gaming experience, because the characters and environments are so much more detailed.
Exclusive to Reloaded
The PS3 and Xbox 360 remakes come with a new single-player mode called “MI6 Ops,” which offers a new challenge at each level, like killing every enemy in sight and stealthily subduing a specified number of combatants. It’s an entertaining way to play GoldenEye, especially for those who can’t get enough of the single-player campaign.
Multiplayer
This aspect was GoldenEye’s bread and butter when the original version came out for the 64, and we imagine it will be again as fans pick up their copies and start logging online. For multiplayer aficionados, Reloaded now supports up to 16 players online, up from eight in the Wii version. This means more bragging rights for skilled Bond players and more frustrating nights for those of us who were always the victim of the elusive golden gun (again, guilty).
Verdict
We thoroughly enjoyed our first experience with GoldenEye 007: Reloaded and highly recommend it to both fans of the original and those new to the franchise. The updated HD single-player campaign mode alone makes it worth the investment. But considering that GoldenEye set the original standard for multiplayer shooters, no doubt you’ll spend plenty of hours after practice, taking on your teammates for Bond bragging rights.
