TRAILER: ‘Divergent’ Sequel ‘Insurgent’
Summit and Lionsgate have released the final full-length trailer for Insurgent, the sequel to 2014’s Divergent. Check it out below.
The first film in the series spent most of its time laying a foundation for sequels to come, and the first one is expected to ramp up the action considerably. In the clip, Tris and Four, again portrayed by Shailene Woodley and Theo James, are on the run. Determined to find answers to the mystery Tris’s family gave up their lives to protect, the divergent duo find themselves at odds with Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), leader of the Erudite faction, who is plotting her way to ultimate power.
“We have to stop her together,” says Four. But they don’t take on the evil Jeanine alone. At least one faction lends a hand in the battle. The trailer shows Tris getting advice from Amity leader Johanna, played by series newcomer Octavia Spencer.
Even the heroine’s drastic haircut is addressed in the film. “I wanted something different,” she intones. But of course we know that in real life, it resulted from Woodley’s involvement in the film The Fault In Our Stars.
You may notice differences in the film compared to the novel by Veronica Roth. For instance, in the film, there seems to be a mystery surrounding a box, and Tris is quite comfortable with a gun, whereas in the book, there is no box and Tris is uneasy about using weapons. However, according to Roth, despite the additions and omissions, the team was able to produce a quality film, and the core characteristics of the characters remain intact.
“I know that some of you are probably apprehensive because as the trailers have revealed, there are a few clear differences between the book and the movie,” wrote Roth on her tumblr page. “I shared that apprehension walking into the screening room, but I walked out of the movie relieved—and excited. The changes that were made streamline the story so it makes sense for this new format; in other words, they work.”
The Divergent Series: Insurgent will be released March 20, but you can purchase your tickets now!
