Rap News Rundown: Jay-Z, Diddy, Kanye, Childish Gambino, Chris Brown
Last week, Jay-Z responded to the Barney controversy, Diddy revealed a long-term goal, Kanye’s marriage proposal sprang a leak, Childish Gambino continued his beef with Lupe Fiasco and Chris Brown was arrested.
Jay-Z Addresses Barney’s Controversy
The New York Daily News recently reported alleged mistreatment of minorities who were shopping at Barneys. According to the report, two African-American customers were questioned by the NYPD for suspected credit card fraud. The article inspired Brooklyn resident Derick Bowers to launch a petition requesting Jay to end his partnership with the retailer.
The rap mogul responded via his Life + Times website, saying he is waiting for all of the facts to come to light before he makes a decision. He said he doesn’t profit from the partnership; the proceeds benefit his charity, the Shawn Carter Foundation.
Diddy Sets Sights on NFL
Diddy hasn’t let his achievements weaken his ambition. During a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, the entrepreneur revealed plans to one day own an NFL franchise.
“I’m more of an owner type of guy,” Diddy said. “So I have aspirations to become—it will happen—to become the first African American majority owner. Not having a small stake, but actually owning an NFL team. I think it’s time for that. A majority of the players in the NFL are African-American, but there are no African-American owners. So that’s one of my dreams.”
Kanye Suing Man Behind Leaked Proposal Video
Kanye West proposed to girlfriend Kim Kardashian last week. He rented out an entire park, hired musicians and attempted to keep the event under wraps by insisting that everyone involved sign non-disclosure agreements. But the contract, which threatened legal action, didn’t prevent footage of the proposal from leaking. YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley posted snippets of the event on his new video app MixBit on Twitter and congratulated the couple. Neither Kim nor Kanye is pleased, however. They reportedly plan to sue the entrepreneur for preempting what could have been an awesome E! exclusive.
Childish Gambino and Lupe Fiasco Continue Bizarre Beef
One of the weirdest beefs in hip-hop continues as Lupe Fiasco and Childish Gambino continue to diss each other via Twitter. Last week while talking with a N.Y. radio station, Childish Gambino said he felt Lupe started it when he “sneak dissed” him. “Here’s the thing, I’m a Lupe fan, to an extent… But he kind of sneak-dissed me… I got what he was sayin’. I understood, but at the same time, it was a sneak diss,” said the actor/rapper.
Lupe replied via Twitter, claiming that accusing another rapper of sneak dissing is also a form of sneak dissing. Confused yet?
Chris Brown Arrested for Felony Assault
Chris Brown was arrested in D.C. over the weekend and charged with felony assault. According to TMZ, Brown was outside a hotel late at night when he was approached by two women who wanted to take a picture with him. Two men then approached and attempted to join the picture. Brown allegedly hurled a homophobic slur and punched one of them in the face. Brown’s camp is telling a different story. According to them, the two men attempted to enter the singer’s tour bus, and he was preventing them from trespassing.
The victim, who suffered a broken nose, has reportedly already contacted an attorney. Brown is still on probation. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.
