Krysten Ritter to Star in ‘Jessica Jones’
Jessica Jones, the first film in the new Marvel series produced for Netflix, has its star. The title character will be played by Krysten Ritter, known for a number of TV series, including Breaking Bad and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. Ritter has also enjoyed a prolific film career, mostly playing memorable supporting characters in movies such as 27 Dresses and What Happens in Vegas.
Ritter will star as the sexy but tough Julia (a.k.a. Jessica Jones) in this drama, based on the Marvel comics. The character projects some of Ritter’s own trademark onscreen characteristics, sardonic and cynical in nature, making her a logical choice for the role.
The character’s backstory is particularly interesting and imaginative. She is a superhero who makes a career change due to her struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder. Jessica chooses to open her own detective agency. Through her new business, she is not only able to help ordinary people, she can also assist other superheroes.
Netflix has committed to a minimum of 13 episodes. Jessica Jones is one of four Marvel superhero shows the streaming service has ordered. The other three are Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. These series are set to begin airing in 2015.
Ritter’s newest feature film is the Amy Adams/Christoph Waltz drama Big Eyes, which goes to wide release on Dec. 25.
