Jessie Usher to Star in ‘Independence Day 2’
Jessie Usher (Survivor’s Remorse) has been cast in the highly anticipated Independence Day 2. The actor will join Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, who is reprising his role as David Levinson from the original film.
Usher has been cast as the son of Will Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller. According to reports, Smith won’t return for this installment. It is still unclear whether Bill Pullman will come back to reprise his role as President Thomas J. Whitmore, but rumor has it that Hemsworth will play his nephew.
Roland Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the first movie, about an alien invasion of Earth, is returning to direct. Based on the characters created by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the screenplay is being written by Carter Blanchard, whose writing credits include the TV series Good vs Evil and an upcoming big screen thriller called Near Death. Blanchard’s collaborators on the script are actors James A. Woods (The Right Kind of Wrong) and Nicolas Wright (Manhattan Love Story), both of whom are making their feature film screenwriting debut. Woods and Wright are also teaming up with Emmerich on Stargate.
Fans have waited almost two decades for a sequel to the blockbuster film, which earned over $800 million in 1996 and helped launch Will Smith’s big screen career.
Independence Day 2 will head into theaters nationwide on June 24, 2016.
