Christian Slater to Star in Pilot for Hacker Series ‘Mr. Robot’
Christian Slater will star in a TV pilot for the hacker drama Mr. Robot on USA Network. Currently in the works at Universal Cable Productions, the series will follow Elliot (Rami Malek), a young programmer for a cybersecurity firm who has an antisocial disorder that leads him to use his tech skills to hack people, because he is unable to connect with them any other way. Slater will play the title character, the mysterious Mr. Robot, an anarchist intent on bringing down corporate America.
Quoted in Variety, USA Network president Chris McCumber said, “Mr. Robot is a visionary drama. It is a very timely and relatable story that captures both the excitement and danger of today’s digital world.”
The cast also includes Swedish actor Martin Wallström (The Stonecutter), Carly Chaikin (Suburgatory) and Portia Doubleday, last seen in the big screen sci-fi drama Her.
The script is being written by Sam Esmail, who penned the upcoming feature film Comet. Esmail is also one of the series’ executive producers, along with his Comet producer Chad Hamilton.
Although Christian Slater is best known for his film roles, he is no stranger to television, having appeared on the small screen throughout his career, including guest appearances on My Name is Earl and The Office and a starring role in the 2014 drama Mind Games.
