Nike to Release Space-Themed Shoes for NBA All-Star Weekend
Expect this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando to be out of this world—at least style-wise. Nike will pay tribute to the city’s Kennedy Space Center with galactic-themed sneakers for the All-Star Game, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26.
Nike plans to offer two groupings, the All-Star Game Pack and the Space Exploration Pack, both inspired by NASA astronauts and the wilds of space that they have explored.
All-Star Game Pack
The All-Star Pack consists of space-inspired sneakers that will be worn by superstars Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant. (Rumor is, the shoes glow in the dark.)
Nike’s Zoom Kobe VII System will reflect a supernova design. Durant will wear his Nike Zoom KD IV, design inspired by a silver Mercury spacesuit. LeBron’s orange LeBron 9 will bring to mind the orange pressure suits worn by astronauts during take-off. Each shoe also features a “mission patch” created by Nike. You can check out the new Galaxy look in the pictures below. For more eye-catching variations on these sneakers, check out the Nike Year of the Dragon collection.
Space Exploration Pack
The Space Exploration Pack includes galactic versions of the Nike Dunk, Flight One and Foamposite One. These shoes also take inspiration from astronauts, mission gear and the wonders of space. The Nike Dunk and Flight One feature tamer models inspired by moon boots and space gear, while the Foamposite One showcases a starry sky.
Space age designs aren’t the only thing that Nike’s galactic shoes will display. The shoes will incorporate a molded glove fit that makes them feel lightweight and allows for greater movement and control.
Nike will release its Space Exploration pack on Feb. 23 in stores and online. The All-Star Game Pack will be available at select retailers and at nike.com starting Feb. 24. So avid basketball players and spaceniks can be sporting these shoes on NBA All-Star Weekend.
