With a rich history in baseball, basketball and boxing, Pony rides innovation toward a resurrection, as the company looks once again to carry athletes to the Promised Land.
Kyle Pulli, Pony’s vice president of design, says his team focuses on a variety of key attributes they want each shoe to have. “Essentially, it’s just defining what elements are actually in a shoe,” he says.
Breathability, flexibility, light weight, comfort and versatility are now standard elements in all Pony shoes, regardless of sport or purpose. Pulli says his designs are “redefining performance for the sport of life. [A Pony shoe] is inspired by a sport, but it’s not 100 percent a performance shoe.”
The company’s newest line of shoes features innovative tweaks on original models. For example, shoes in Pony’s Play line have rounded heels—ideal for shooting hoops—and an embossed crocodile pattern for flexibility and style. Their Performance line includes the Trifecta, a lightweight shoe with hard rubber on the outside for better traction when cutting.
As Pulli continues to resurrect a vintage brand, his motto is, “it’s all about playing and having fun, but having relevant performance benefits built in.”
