RED 2 hasn't even hit theaters yet, and Summit has already started working on its sequel, according to Hollywood Reporter. The studio has tapped series screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to create a script for RED 3, and producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has already signed on.
The move comes after Summit received high audience screening scores for RED 2. Most of the original cast returns for the action-comedy film, including Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker. Morgan Freeman will not be returning because his character died in the first movie. But the flick introduces some new talent along for the ride: Anthony Hopkins, Lee Byung-hun and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The premise of the movie seems to be similar to its predecessor. This time, Frank Moses (Willis) and Marvin Boggs (Malkovich) will tangle with some European thugs while Moses's girlfriend Sarah Ross (Parker) tags along. MI6 has hired former friend Victoria (Mirren) to kill the group, after they show up on Interpol's most wanted list. Victoria will have help from Han (Byung-hun), whom Moses calls "the best contract killer in the world" in the latest trailer for the movie. Check it out below.
RED 2, which will hit theaters on July 19, was directed by Dean Parisot, who is known for his work on Galaxy Quest. Production on RED 3 could start as soon as January 2014 if everything behind the scenes runs smoothly.
