After starring together in two critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook and last year’s American Hustle, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are teaming up again for a third big screen feature.
The popular actors play an ambitious married couple in the Depression-era drama Serena. Set in the mountains of North Carolina around 1930, the film centers on George and Serena Pemberton, who work together to build a timber empire. Serena proves herself as tough and capable as any man. They are a ruthless and power hungry couple who refuse to let anything stand in the way of achieving their goals.
Life gets complicated for the Pembertons when it becomes clear that the one thing the competent Serena cannot do is provide an heir to inherit their business empire. And when she discovers that George fathered an illegitimate son before their marriage, the plot takes a dark turn.
The cast also includes Lawrence’s Hunger Games co-star Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans (Elementary), Sean Harris (Deliver Us from Evil), Sam Reid (Hatfields & McCoys) and Charity Wakefield (Vivaldi: The Red Priest).
Based on the book by Ron Rash, the screenplay was written by Christopher Kyle, best known for the historical action/adventure epic Alexander. The movie was directed by Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (Love Is All You Need).
Serena is set to be released On Demand Feb. 26, 2015 before opening in theaters on March 27.
