STACK Battle of the Brands Semifinals Recap
Team Reebok won the Battle of the Brands regular season title, but it’s all irrelevant now. The playoffs are finally here, and it’s time to determine which brand is king of the STACK Battle of the Brands fantasy football league.
Team adidas Knocks Off Top-Ranked Team Reebok, 121-79
The prescription for fantasy football playoff success is to go with the guys who got you there. Only for Team adidas, their regular-season star player was unavailable in the semifinals due to injury. Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill replaced Robert Griffin III and filled in nicely with a team-leading 26 fantasy points. The breakout performance came from adidas WR Leonard Hankerson, who was a last-minute start after WR Davone Bess was ruled out just before kickoff. Hankerson provided a spark from the wideout position with two TD receptions. In all, six of the seven adidas starters recorded double-digit points, including 19 points apiece from the running back trio of Frank Gore, C.J. Spiller and DeMarco Murray.
Conversely, Team Reebok’s big time point producers cooled off in the semi’s, as WRs Roddy White and Reggie Wayne combined for eight points, while RB Jamaal Charles finished with just under six points. The early exit for Reebok, the surprise squad in the Battle of the Brands, comes after the team scored its second lowest point total of the year.
Semifinals MVP: Ryan Tannehill: 220 passing yards, 2 TD; eight carries, 52 rushing yards
Strong Start Helps Team Nike Put Away Team Under Armour, 124-112
Three of the five regular-season matchups between these two brands were decided by 13 points or less, so it’s only fitting that the semifinal was a closely-fought contest.
Under Armour trailed by 44 points with three starters remaining heading into Sunday night’s matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots, but failed to close the gap after dreadful performances from TE Vernon Davis (two points) and RB Steven Ridley (.3 points).
The final numbers for each brand’s top performers were eerily similar. Adrian Peterson and Julio Jones finished with exactly 27.2 points apiece for Teams Nike and Under Armour, respectively. Nike QB Matt Ryan scored 28.7 points; Tom Brady responded Sunday night with 28.82 for UA. In the end, the difference wasn’t which team did the most damage in the scoring category but rather, which team was able to minimize the self-destruction.
Semifinals MVP: Adrian Peterson: 24 carries, 212 yards, one TD
Championship Matchup
Team adidas (4th) vs. Team Nike (2nd)
