‘The Hunger Games’ Spoof Coming Soon to Theaters
A new comedy takes aim to make fun of the immensely successful The Hunger Games.
The Starving Games, set in a post-apocalyptic future, centers on Kantmiss Evershot, who decides to take her younger sister’s place in the 75th Annual “Starving Games.” Kantmiss, played by Maiara Walsh, joins forces with geeky Peter Malarkey (Cody Allen Christian), a baker’s son, in a battle of life and death. If victorious, Kantmiss can win prizes like an old ham, a half-price footlong sub and a partially eaten pickle.
This is the latest in a string of film parodies from writing/directing duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, who also collaborated on the Scary Movie franchise and 2006’s Date Movie.
Watch The Starving Games official trailer below and check out how the filmmakers take every opportunity to poke fun at the already over-the-top The Hunger Games. For example, the new spoof makes a good effort to parody its target’s humorously bizarre costumes, but it can’t top the ludicrous clothes and makeup in the original.
The picture also mocks other sci-fi and fantasy films like The Avengers—and pop culture idols such as Taylor Swift.
In addition to Walsh and Christian, the movie features Brant Daugherty (Pretty Little Liars) as Kantmiss’s sexy “friend” Dale; Diedrich Bader, best known for his role as Oswald on The Drew Carey Show; Nick Gomez (Dexter); and Lauren Bowles.
The Starving Games hits theaters in limited release Nov. 14, 2013.
