‘The Railway Man’ Revisits Horrors of WWII
Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman star in the intense drama, The Railway Man, a thriller based on Eric Lomax’s powerful autobiography, Railway Man: A POW’s Searing Account of War, Brutality and Forgiveness. Firth plays Lomax, a British Army officer whose horrific experiences as a prisoner of war in a Japanese labor camp during World War II haunt him for decades. When he learns that the man responsible for most of his abusive treatment is still alive, Lomax decides to confront him.
Nicole Kidman plays Patricia Wallace, a woman who loves Lomax, stands by him and tries to help him overcome the demons of his past. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård (Thor: The Dark World), Sam Reid (Hatfields & McCoys), and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the young Eric Lomax. Playing the young version of Lomax’s tormenter, Nagase, is the exciting new talent, Tanroh Ishida, who also will be seen in Keanu Reeves’ epic film 47 Ronin, opening in December. Coincidentally, Ishida’s co-star from 47 Ronin, Hiroyuki Sanada, portrays the older version of Nagase in The Railway Man.
Considering the movie’s compelling subject matter, it’s not surprising that early screenings have elicited emotional reactions from audiences. At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the film received a lengthy standing ovation.
The Railway Man is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, most recently known for the drama, Burning Man. Frank Cottrell Boyce (Code 46) wrote the screenplay along with Andy Paterson, who is also one of the film’s many producers.
The Railway Man premieres in theaters Jan. 1, 2014.
