Tracking your workouts is critical to making athletic progress. The more information you have about your performance, the easier it is to identify where you need to improve. To help athletes expand this capability, Timex released the Global Trainer, one of the most informative and versatile sports watches on the market.
We recently had the opportunity to test the Global Trainer. Its large, clear display is surrounded by seven easy-to-use navigation and time control buttons. The product is durable enough to withstand the rigors of training and competition, and it’s water-resistant up to 50 meters.
The Global Trainer’s headline feature is its GPS functionality, unusual in a sports watch. You can track your distance traveled, speed, altitude and pace when running or biking. You can even set up waypoints for up to 50 custom routes. The GPS works as advertised and appears to be accurate based on our tests; however, it took several minutes to acquire a signal in an open field.
The Global Trainer’s primary drawback is its size and weight. The face is large and thick, and the watch is fairly heavy. This would be a concern for an athlete with a small wrist or or one who doesn’t want a bulky watch strapped to his or her arm while working out.
The optional heart rate monitor is comfortable to wear. Heart rate training has benefits. The monitor can alert you if your heart beats per minute fall outside of your desired range. By tracking your heart rate, the watch can also estimate how many calories you’re burning.
The Global Trainer has modes specifically designed for running, biking and swimming. You can customize the screen to display your most relevant stats. The interface is relatively simple to use, and the stats show up clearly.
You can store up to 20 saved workouts and upload them to your computer. With the wealth of information provided, you will be able to more accurately assess your workouts, find weaknesses and continually make progress towards your goals.
The Ironman Global Trainer, priced at $300 ($360 with a heart rate monitor), is available at retailers worldwide and at timex.com.
