Twisted Metal’s “Shoot The Truck”: Cool Promotion or Tasteless Hype?
Ever want to shoot at a truck in the middle of the desert? If so, now’s your chance with Twisted Metal’s “Shoot The Truck” event to promote the upcoming release of the Twisted Metal action-shooter game. Their pitch for the promotion? “Think of a slightly more violent version of The Claw game.”
For such a bizarre promotion, the concept is quite simple. Somewhere in the middle of the Nevada desert, there’s a real truck with a real gun set up in front of it. Users can register online to take control of the gun; and with a webcam hookup, they’ll be able to see the damage they inflict on the helpless vehicle. This, promoters hope, will get gamers in the mood to destroy more automobiles in Twisted Metal, a vehicle combat game for PS3 releasing on Feb. 14.
Will it work? Is this a brilliant, creative way to promote a game, or a crude attempt to stimulate a viral campaign? Frankly, considering how some gamers make the rounds on YouTube to stoke their incredibly short tempers, we’re skeptical about handing over a live weapon to one of them. On the other hand, “Shoot the Truck” might simply be an adult version of the BB gun game kids play in carnivals around the country.
Either way, we’re staying out of the debate and deferring to you, your friends and teammates. Let us know what you think about this promotion by writing on our Facebook wall or tweeting us at @STACKMedia.
