WATCH: 42-Year-Old Hideki Matsui Jacks a Home Run Into the Second Deck During Yankees Old-Timers’ Game
It’s been four years since Hideki Matsui swung a bat for an MLB team, making it easy to forget how incredible he was over his 10-year career. After coming over from Japan to join the New York Yankees in 2003, Matsui proceeded to drive in more than 100 runs for three straight seasons, including a high of 116 in 2005. He hit 31 home runs for the Yankees in 2004, the same year he provided the team with a WAR of 4.6. Matsui was a very good player for almost a decade, and it looks like his majestic swing hasn’t deserted him.
Participating in the Yankees Old-Timers’ Game at Yankee Stadium this afternoon, Matsui took a pitch from former Yankee great David Cone and bombed it into the second deck above right field. The swing was smooth, and Matsui clearly hasn’t lost any power despite checking in at the ripe old age of 42.
This season, the Yankees currently rank 11th out of 15 American League teams in home runs, with just 64 so far, which goes along with their current fourth place position in the AL East standings. Perhaps the Yankees are hoping Matsui will stay in pinstripes for the rest of the season.
