In recent years, youth sports funding has been cut dramatically. It’s estimated that 27 percent of U.S. public high schools will not offer any sports programs by 2020. But the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter program is helping to save underfunded youth sports all around the country.
DICK’S Sporting Goods most recently helped the Fifth Ward Saints youth football team in Houston. Coach Carlos Honore created the football program to protect at-risk kids in a tough area. In 2014, the team’s football equipment was stolen and everything Honore did for the kids was lost.
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation stepped in and re-equipped the program and also gave them a $100,000 grant to keep the kids on the field. Since 2014, DICK’S has pledged more than $50 million to help and support over 2,000 youth sports teams.
DICK’S is now selling green shoe laces to expand awareness around the youth sports funding crisis. For each pair of green laces sold, DICK’S donates $2 to the Sports Matters program.
