Would You Take Breakfast Cereal Advice From LeBron James?
Recently, we’ve highlighted some less-than-sound medical advice provided by LeBron James, as well as his paid endorsement of a sketchy cryptocurrency app framed as a charitable endeavor for his foundation for at-risk kids. Now, just in time for National Cereal Day on March 7 (yea, it really is a thing), LeBron has unveiled his endorsement of a truly bizarre collaboration between Fruity Pebbles cereal and a Fruity Pebbles cereal-inspired Nike sneaker.
Yes, you read that right; LeBron and Nike are rolling out the LeBron James 19 Low Magic Fruity Pebbles Shoe. And, since athletic shoes and breakfast cereal clearly go hand-in-hand, the collaboration will also feature the release of a new variety of Fruity Pebbles called … wait for it … Magic Fruity Pebbles.
So, what will a shoe inspired by a breakfast cereal look like? According to a press release, the shoe features actual photography of Magic Fruity Pebbles red and yellow cereal flakes. But, “the real magic is the new 19 Low’s Photochromic DCS Technology where the shoe’s airbag uses the power of the sun’s UV light to transition a completely clear Air unit to a purple colorway.”
At this point, let’s not forget we’re also being promised “limited edition” Magic Fruity Pebbles. What’s the “magic” you ask? According to the press release, Fruity Pebbles was LeBron’s favorite cereal growing up, and this “magic” version features “crispy, delicious red and yellow rice flakes that magically turn your milk purple.” So, instead of the normal putrid orange milk you get with regular Fruity Pebbles, the magic LeBron version will turn your milk, like the shoe, a lovely shade of putrid purple. Magic indeed!

The press release also says that “the cereal is delicious, gluten-free, and graced with the magical ability to turn your bowl of cereal into an Instagrammable royal feast for the senses.” So, aside from the laughably desperate-to-go-viral suggestion and the actual, non-ironic use of “Instagrammable” as an adjective, I think it’s relevant to point out that “Instagrammable” rhymes with “flammable.”
Finally, it should be mentioned that this isn’t LeBron’s first foray into the breakfast cereal endorsement realm. It was less than two years ago that he appeared on boxes of Wheaties. And, while that endorsement for the so-called “Breakfast of Champions” also featured kids from his foundation, I Promise, it appears LeBron’s goal in endorsing this unholy synergy of cereal and shoes is “I Profit.”
If you’re a sneakerhead, or you’ve always stared into your cereal bowl wondering why you can’t have a pair of shoes that look like cereal, the limited edition Nike LeBron James 19 Low Magic Fruity Pebbles shoe will go on sale March 7th at selected retailers and Nike.com for the low, low price of $160.
Finally, if $160 for a pair of cereal-inspired shoes is too rich for your budget, and you’re brave enough to try the artificially sweetened, artificially colored (but gluten-free) breakfast bounty that is Magic Fruity Pebbles, each box comes with a discount code to Nike.com and a chance to win your very own pair of “ultra-limited-edition Nike LeBron19 Low color-changing shoes.” Look for it in the cereal aisle of a grocery store near you.
