Try Premier Volleyball's Advanced Setting Technique

July 20, 2011

Setting the table for your team’s hardest-hitting attacker involves more than simply moving under the volleyball and haphazardly passing it in her direction. Delivering a perfectly-placed pass is a three-step movement, which, when executed with precision at full speed, will stuff your stat sheet with assists.

According to Wyman Khuu, national team coach and skills coordinator for the Premier Volleyball Academy [Maumee, Ohio], the most important aspect of setting is to maintain a tall posture and play the ball at its highest point.

Here, Khuu describes the three positions for setting:

  1. Belly-Button/Ready Position: Create ball shape with hands, keeping fingers one inch apart and hands in front of belly.
  2. Five-Head Position: When ball is in air, extend arms overhead and raise hands to highest point, keeping elbows narrow and hands in ball shape with fingers one inch apart.
  3. Finish Position: Move into position to execute pass, keeping elbows locked, arms fully extended and hands in ball shape position. Follow through with hands in circular motion to direct pass to attacker.

Round out your volleyball skillset by learning the Drop and Drive defensive movement, Premier’s go-to technique for digging out hard-hit serves.
