The prize for most-watched sport on cable TV during the first week of the 2012 Summer Olympics goes to... archery? Yes, it's true!

From a simple hunting tool, the bow and arrow evolved into a mechanized killing machine with rapid-fire, trigger-happy switches. From ancient times to the present, archery has always occupied a special place in human existence. But what made archery so popular this Olympic season?

One possible explanation is the role of the bow and arrow in popular blockbuster hits like Avatar and The Hunger Games. (Check out the Hunger Games trailer.)

Whether the current excitement about  archery can be sustained, or it becomes another fleeting fancy of pop culture, one thing is certain: talented archers need a sharp eye and steady arm.

Will archery stand the test of time? We will have to wait and see.
