When it comes to water, most people today are drinking bottled water. Tap has given water a bad name. However, carbonated water can also be a good choice. Carbonated and sparkling waters are becoming very popular today. If you look down the water aisle in the grocery store, you will see many different types and selections. Although they have become very popular, many people question if carbonated water is healthy or not. But you need not worry. It is healthy and imposes no threat to your body.
Carbonation happens in two different ways. It can be natural from a spring, like sparkling water. Or, it can be infused with carbon dioxide like with flavored waters to make them fizzy and fun.
Here are many different popular types of carbonated waters you can drink.
Sparkling water has a natural gas that carbonates the water in the spring. The nice thing about sparkling water is that it contains minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium. All the electrolytes! However, as for any water sparkling or natural, to get minerals in the water depends on what rocks the water is situated. For example, in Brazil, the sparkling water, has about 2 grams of potassium and 11 grams of magnesium per liter. That’s why they say to have success; it is all about location, location, location!
Seltzer is made with water infused with CO2. It is just carbonated water, that’s it. There is no flavoring or minerals added to make it healthier. It also has no flavor. Seltzer is most commonly used for specific alcoholic beverages and other commercial drinks.
Club soda is a fusion of CO2 and water. However, there is a difference between club and seltzer. Club adds salts like potassium benzoate and potassium sulfur. Also, club soda contains sodium citrate. These compounds are added to create a similar taste to sparkling water at a less expensive cost.
Tonic water is a mixture of CO2, water, and quinine. Quinine was a compound used to prevent malaria. It is what brings the funky bitter taste to the water. There is no alarm for concern about drinking tonic water. The quinine is highly diluted.
The Benefits of Carbonated Water
Helps You to Feel Full
Carbonated water can help you feel full after a meal because of the gas. Just make sure you are drinking it after your meal.
Helps Improve Swallowing
Carbonated water helps to improve swallowing. Carbonated water stimulates the nerves and muscles for swallowing.
Carbonated water helps relieve constipation.
Prevents Heart Disease
Some research suggests sparkling water rich in sodium can decrease the risk of heart disease. For example, a study that was done with postmenopausal women showed that sparkling water increased their HDL’s and lowered their LDL’s.
When choosing carbonated water, be careful of the ingredients. For example, many flavored carbonated water drinks contain large amounts of sugar and artificial flavors like high fructose syrup. As a result, you may think you are drinking a healthier drink when, in fact, it is not healthy and can be just as bad as drinking a soda or industrialized product.
How to Make Your Own Carbonated Flavored Drink
Here is a tasty recipe called Swiss Lime drink. It is very healthy for you. Choose a seltzer or sparkling water. I like sparkling water. Squeeze about three to four fresh limes in about one liter of water. You can add mint to boost the mineral content and taste. You can also add sugar if you want. That’s up to you. Even if you add sugar it will be healthier than any commercial product.
However, words from the wise, add lime juice and sugar slowly, or you will have a scientific volcanic eruption experiment occur.
There is no research, evidence, or indication that carbonated water is unhealthy or harmful for your body. If anything, sparkling water has additional benefits because of its minerals.
My suggestion is to choose water that contains minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium, and many others.
