‘Pitch Perfect’ Planning Another Encore
Fresh off the amazing success of the sequel to Pitch Perfect comes word that Pitch Perfect 3 has been given the green light. Negotiations are underway with Kay Cannon, who wrote the screenplays for the first two installments, to write the third installment. A lot of uncertainty surrounds the project, including whether franchise co-star and producer Elizabeth Banks, who directed the last movie, will direct number 3 as well.
News that the 3rd film is moving forward is not surprising considering that Pitch Perfect 2, which premiered May 15, earned over $160 million in its first few weeks. Banks and cast member Anna Kendrick both suggested that their participation in a third movie depended on how well the second installment did at the box office. Now that the movie has become a gigantic hit, fans can be fairly certain that Banks and Kendrick will return to this comedy franchise, which centers on everyone’s favorite collegiate a cappella group.
Kendrick appears leery of sequels in general. She was quoted in Time about her reluctance to do Pitch Perfect 2: “I didn’t know if they were just going to do a sloppy seconds version of it, and that was the thing that made me nervous. When I found out it was really going forward and it was going to be a real movie and everybody was coming back—there was no way I was going to miss out on that.”
As for Rebel Wilson, the actress previously said she was already signed on for Pitch Perfect 3. Popular newcomer Hailee Steinfeld is reportedly also locked in for this follow-up.
