SoCal Elite 11 Top Performers
The final Elite 11 Regional Camp of the fall tour featuring several of the top west coast quarterbacks followed the SoCal Stack Sports Showcase this past Sunday.
The west was strongly represented with over 50 quarterbacks in a 3-hour workout at El Camino College. Several national recruits were solidifying their place as the top in their class, with a few sleeper prospects catching the coaches’ eyes as well.
As mentioned in Stack’s previous article summarizing the showcase, our overall Top Performer should be no surprise. Here’s a look at who else impressed, including feedback received from the Elite 11 staff.
Top Performer
Malachi Nelson, Los Alamitos (CA) – 2023
In a powerful group of quarterbacks, Nelson still stood out as the most polished and consistent. At most showcase events, quarterbacks try to impress and overcompensate with arm strength but not Nelson. He completed his passes accurately and on time, taking home the underclassman (non-Class of 2022 prospect) win in the accuracy challenge for the night. He showed his skill as a pocket passer and the ability to throw rolling left/right and from several different arm angles. Nelson is on pace to be in the discussion for the top overall player in the class of 2023 with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Florida, Georgia, and will most likely have just about every college in the country by the time he’s ready to commit.
Next 5
AJ Duffy, Rancho Verde (CA) – 2022
After speaking with many of the coaches concluding the Elite 11 showcase, many mentioned Duffy as the most consistent quarterback of the day. They were impressed with how much more significant, stronger, and more agile he looked from last season. He moves well in and out of the pocket and throws with accuracy on all three levels of the field. Many coaches praised his high IQ, mechanics. Coaches tight release saying he could be one of the most college-ready quarterbacks in the region with offers from Arizona State, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Oregon, Oregon State, and Penn State.
Maalik Murphy, Serra (CA) – 2022
Murphy had a great day overall and was on the top of the list when it became the most polished passers of the Elite 11. With a tall, muscular frame, elite arm strength, and the ability to make accurate throws in all three levels of the field, he possesses a ton of raw upside and as high of a ceiling as many quarterbacks in the region regardless of class. His upcoming junior season will be a huge one for him, holding offers from big-name programs like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, UCLA, and USC.
Nate Johnson, Clovis (CA) – 2022
Johnson was quick to make heads turn, running two 4.4 40-yard dashes back to back during the camp’s testing phase. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback who can stress a defense with his legs but looked very comfortable throwing from the pocket as well. In drills that emphasized mobility, timing, and throwing out of the pocket, Johnson got the ball out quickly while also showing accuracy and touch. The ceiling is too high, especially with two more years to develop, and is projected as a national recruit with Utah and Arizona offers.
Jaden Rashada, Pittsburg (CA) – 2023
There was a lot to like about the sophomore standout dual-threat prospect. With a tall 6’3″ projectable frame, Rashada has a smooth feel to his game and makes throws from different arm angles look easy. Many coaches were impressed with both the fluidity and accuracy in his throws when rolling to either side, putting a nice touch on some sideline throws. Rashada is approaching double-digit offers, with Arizona State, Auburn, California, and Utah among those already on his offer list.
Katin Houser St. John Bosco (CA) – 2022
Houser moved through the stations with excellent arm strength delivering the ball on time and with a quick release. His throws consistently hit the receivers in stride, looking incredibly comfortable on throws to the perimeter. As he prepares for a crucial junior season, several Power 5 programs express interest with offers from Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose State, UNLV, and Washington State.
Additional Standouts:
Tyler Voss, Valencia (CA) – 2022
Voss was throwing the ball and anyone throughout the stations and made a few off-balance throws that were among the best throws in the camp.
Anthony Garcia, Capital Christian (CA) – 2022
The 6’2″ dual-threat quarterback threw a nice ball and showed great touch near the red zone while also finishing first overall in the Stack Showcase testing portion with a 97 overall score.
Emmett Brown, Mater Dei (CA) – 2022
Tied for the Class of 2022 accuracy challenge winner with Maalik Murphy and was consistently good in every other drill as well.
Brandon Rose, Murrieta Valley (CA) – 2022
Elite 11 staff mentioned it was the best they have seen Rose throw the ball and were impressed by his athleticism. He was pretty consistent in every station showing solid arm strength and decisiveness in his throws.
