What is Reiki? And, How Does it Work?
Reiki is something difficult to believe unless you have had some sessions. So, if you are not sure what Reiki is, let me explain it and see if it is something right for you.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a healing treatment that helps your body relax. It helps reduce stress so your body can heal itself or function better. For example, after treatments, people feel zoned out or tired but at the same time tranquil and peaceful. Also, people feel happy, smiling, and energetic. And others feel a sense of focus and contentment without stress. And that is how it works. It resets your nervous system and mind to function better and at ease.
When you are relaxed, your body can heal itself. In contrast, stress creates inflammation in your body that disrupts this unique and fantastic ability leading to disease and poor health. And when energy is blocked, it causes energy to slow down. The purpose of Reiki is to remove these energy blocks and increase the flow.
Reiki comes from Japan. Rei means universal, and ki means energy or life force. Reiki is a complementary therapy that is based on similar Eastern medicine concepts like acupuncture and shiatsu, where energy produces health and vitality.
Health Benefits of Reiki
By producing relaxation in the body, it can:
- Restore relaxation to the nervous system.
- Help release tension and resolve pain in muscles and joints.
- Help strengthen your immune system.
- Calm your emotions and improve wellbeing.
- Improve the quality of your sleep.
- Help you think clearly and reduce anxiety.
- Be used to help with pain management.
- Can help with diseases and disorders.
Never use Reiki as a replacement for any medical treatments prescribed by your doctor. Instead, Reiki works as a complementary therapy that you should be discussed with your doctor first.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki practitioners study symbols and chakras. They use their hands to move energy into chakras and around your body. Often, energy gets stuck and does not flow through the whole body as it should. This idea is the thought process of a reiki practitioner and they believe this is what causes pain and leads to disease and disorder. The practitioner acts as a conduit between universal energy and you to restore and balance energy in your body. Sometimes, the practitioner touches you or has the hands hovering over you in your aura.
Do this to understand Reiki
Try this. Place your hands in front of you with your palms facing each other. Now, bring your palms close together, about ½ an inch apart, without touching. Extend your fingers, so they are straight, not forcefully. Just hold that position and notice if you feel an energy field form between your palms. You will feel density in the middle of your palms or if like someone was slightly touching you or a pinging sensation. If not, slightly move your palms slowly back and forth and in circles. You should feel the energy. That is how Reiki works.
What happens during a reiki session?
Reiki sessions can last from about 50-60 minutes. You will lie down on a massage table with your clothes on during the session. Your disposition and reason for treatment will depend on where the practitioner will put their hands. There is no massage or pressure like when used in shiatsu or massage therapy. Since energy is neutral energy, your body takes what it needs from the universe through the practitioner. And the practitioner facilitates the process.
You will feel deeply relaxed during the session. Then, you will start to breathe deeper, better, and fall into a deep meditative state where it feels like you fell asleep. Sometimes it is hard to wake from the deep meditation, but when you do, you feel great, focused, and have a smile on your face when you finally wake-up.
How is a practitioner attuned?
A master teaches Reiki. The master passes their knowledge on to the student through some coursework. Once the master feels the student is ready, they attune the students with sacred symbols on specific places on the body. This opens the energy flow to the universal energy. These points never close and are open for life.
Reiki is taught on three levels. The first level is when practitioners learn the symbols and how they are used. Then, they practice feeling energy and giving it. On the second level, practitioners practice distance healing by looking at photos or using their thoughts and mental imagery to send energy to people. And the third level is the master level, where a practitioner teaches Reiki and attunes students. Level two is the highest if a person just wants to practice Reiki.
Reiki is an experience. Try to find a practitioner who has been practicing for some years. Or seek recommendations. Sometimes people say nothing happened during their session, which leaves them to not believe in its power and effectiveness.
